Backy Lakey Dompu Orphanage

In the Hu’u District, there exists a poignant reality for many children who are growing up without their parents. These children’s stories vary – some come from fractured homes, others are left behind by parents who migrated for work and never returned, and some are orphaned due to tragic accidents or diseases. Often, they find themselves in the care of relatives like uncles, aunts, or grandparents who, despite their best efforts, struggle to provide adequate care due to financial constraints.

The challenges faced by orphans in the Hu’u Subdistrict are multifaceted and profound. They grapple with limited access to education and are vulnerable to issues such as drug abuse, alcoholism, sexual harassment, and exploitation. These children, who should be the future pillars of our country, show an eagerness to learn and contribute positively to their communities. We see their enthusiasm and potential in our social activities, where they often assist in environmental efforts like beach clean-ups or gardening.

However, these orphan children are particularly susceptible to negative influences and a scarcity of resources, putting them at risk. Their situation is not just a call for concern but a call to action. They need our support and assistance to navigate these challenges and realize their full potential in a world that has so far been less than kind to them.

Our Vision

The realization of a prosperous, independent, noble, trustworthy and caring generation of orphans:

  1. Protect and provide, food, clothing and shelter and a decent living for orphans and neglected children.
  2. Provide psychological and moral/religious guidance so orphans develop good character.
  3. Provide education in good formal schools.
  4. Provide occupational training/apprenticeships in organic farming, earth science/the environment, industrial arts such as welding, information technology, food service/hospitality, communications, and so on

Our Experience

Throughout our journey, we’ve had the honor of forging friendships with individuals from diverse cultural and faith backgrounds. These friendships have been a profound learning experience, revealing to us the universal nature of compassion that resonates across all great cultures. With the invaluable support and wisdom of these friends, we’ve embarked on environmental clean-ups, volunteered for health projects in remote hamlets, and pioneered organic farming initiatives in the Cempi Bay region of Sumbawa Island.

In our most recent endeavor, we established the Backy Lakey Dompu Foundation. This initiative is a heartfelt commitment to assist underprivileged children and orphans, offering support that goes beyond just material needs. Our aim is to provide a holistic approach to care, addressing various aspects essential for their growth and well-being.

Project Good Earth Farm

Our goal is to be a positive influence in the lives of as many children as possible. To accomplish this, we are building a youth center for disadvantaged children and orphans. The center, which we call Good Earth Farm, already offers regular programs every Friday. With the new facility, we can offer two-week residential youth camps.
We are grateful to Health Access Sumbawa Australia.
